Tooth Extractions in Calgary, AB

There are several common reasons a tooth extraction is necessary, and it’s one of the most performed procedures at Sedona Dental in Calgary.

Certain other routine dental procedures can often repair damaged teeth, such as fillings, crowns, and root canals. However, teeth that are so severely decayed, infected, or damaged might need to be extracted altogether.

In a tooth extraction procedure, the tooth in question is completely pulled out from its roots and socket deep down in the jawbone.

About Tooth Extractions

Depending on your circumstances, you’ll have one of two types of dental extractions, either a simple extraction or a surgical extraction. Whichever variety of extraction you’re having done, at least a local anesthetic will be administered, and sometimes further and deeper sedation dental so that you can feel relaxed and comfortable while you’re in the chair.

We aim for the procedure to be totally painless; however, you can expect to feel some pressure.

What Happens During Your Emergency Dental Appointment?

In general, a simple extraction procedure only requires an injection of local anesthetic. This injection will make the area being worked on numbed so that you can’t feel a thing. With a special extraction tool known as an elevator, your dentist will carefully loosen the tooth from the socket, and it will be removed with forceps.

Surgical Extraction

More complex tooth extractions may necessitate a surgical extraction. During this procedure, you’ll be put under general anesthesia that will make you completely unconscious. Surgical extractions will be performed for teeth that have not come through the gums yet or those that have become broken below the gum line.

Your dentist or oral surgeon will make a precise incision in the gums and perhaps even into the bone in order to extract the tooth fully. For teeth that are particularly difficult to remove, they may be cut into smaller pieces to promote an easier extraction.

After your tooth extraction, whether it was a simple extraction or surgical, it’s very important to follow your dentist’s post-operative care instructions so as to prevent infection at the site of the extraction and promote quick and incident-free healing.
